Characteristics of Animals

·        The word animal comes from Latin word animalis meaning “to have soul” or “living”

·        In the evolutionary terms a living organism that is able to reproduce, find food, repair itself and adapt to its environment.

·        The basic needs of all animals:

1.     To reproduce

2.     To escape predation

3.     To be able to adjust to its environment
Food consumed as a finished product – all animals are consumers
                                Most invertebrates                 Some invertebrates and all vertebrates

4 different types of symmetry in animal kingdom:
Bilateral – eg. Insects, mammals, fish, etc.

Pentaradial – eg. Sea stars, sand dollars, etc.

Radial – eg. Sea urchins, Hydra, sea jellies etc.

Asymmetrical – eg. Sponges
